About the Program

Founded in 1925, the University of Miami has long held an international reputation for its innovative approaches to graduate education. The School of Business Administration offers qualified applicants the opportunity to participate in a unique, cross-disciplinary program of doctoral studies in business and economics.

The program allows students to pursue either a PhD in Business or a PhD in Economics. Those pursuing a PhD in Business choose a concentration in accounting, management science, marketing, operations management, organizational behavior or strategy/international business. Both degree programs are designed to equip students with the skills needed to undertake original knowledge creation in these areas, leading to academic placement in the world’s top research universities.

The PhD programs combine interdisciplinary research with one-on-one mentoring from faculty experts within your field of study. Our internationally recognized faculty establish an environment conducive to our goal of developing outstanding scholars for careers in research and teaching at leading academic institutions throughout the world.

PhD in Economics

The PhD program in economicis provides a rigorous exposure to microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, monetary theory and policy, and quantitative methods.  Priority is assigned to research. Small classes afford each student the opportunity to participate in discussions and benefit from continuous faculty-student interaction. Both the classroom and research components are supplemented by colloquia presented by internationally recognized scholars.

The Doctoral Admissions Committee welcomes applications from different undergraduate and graduate degrees. A masters degree is not required for admission to the PhD program. Required Prerequisite Courses must be completed prior to admission or in the summer prior to commencing doctoral studies. Required “Core” Courses can be waived by consent of the appropriate department.

Curriculum and Prerequisites

A minimum of 60 credit hours are required to earn the PhD in Business degree. The program requires year-round, full-time study in order to maximize interaction between faculty and students. Students are expected to interact and begin research projects with the faculty upon entering the program.
