Services to Local/Minority Faculty and Teachers

The UM CIBER is committed to improving interest in and understanding of international business issues among teachers, faculty and students in South Florida’s high schools and community colleges, as well as national historically black universities, and Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

The center offers a number of training, scholarship and other programs to help teachers and faculty gain the knowledge, experience, and resources they need to bring international business instruction into the classroom, to internationalize existing business courses and to develop specialized IB courses throughout their programs.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Program

Teachers within the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) can receive international business training through CIBER’s expansion of the “Adopt the World” and “MiGlobE” initiatives established in 2008 by the University of Miami’s Master of Arts in International Administration (MAIA) program. The CIBER develops two new modules and electronic materials on international business issues each year. The CIBER also distributes the modules via the Internet to all M-DCPS social science teachers for use in their classes and sponsors the participation of additional teachers from six magnet schools.

UM School of Education Teacher Development Program

The UM CIBER delivers an international business module to “Teach for America” volunteers enrolled in the Master of Science in Education and Social Change program at the University of Miami’s School of Education and to members of the School’s Support Network for Novice Teachers. The module it taught by faculty of the School of Education and School of Business Administration. The CIBER awards scholarships to attend the Global Business Forum to the two top performers in this module.

Community College Faculty Development Programs

The UM CIBER provides funding for one faculty member from Miami Dade College or Xavier University of Louisiana to attend the Michigan State University’s biennial Advanced International Business Institute (AIBI) for Community College Faculty. This unique faculty development program is designed for community college faculty who have previously attended international business faculty development workshops, seminars, or conferences, as well as faculty who bring previous international business experience to their classrooms, and international business program administrators.

The CIBER also provides funding for one faculty member from Miami Dade College to attend the Globalizing Business Schools program organized by the University of Memphis CIBER. This program, a collaboration among CIBERs, the Institute for International Public Policy of the United Negro College Fund, and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, exposes participants to the knowledge, experience, and resources they need to internationalize general business courses and to develop specialized international business courses at their institutions.

The 9th Biennial International Business Institute for Community College Faculty was hosted by Michigan State University on June 5-9, 2011. This was a unique professional development program designed specifically for community and technical college faculty. The aim of the Institute was to provide participants with the knowledge, experience and resources they need to internationalize general business courses and/or develop specialized international business courses at the two-year college level.

UM CIBER sponsored two faculty members from Miami Dade College:

  • Stephen Colyer
  • Maria Mari
