Foreign Language and Culture Programs

Business Portuguese Course

UM CIBER supports the Department of Modern Languages and Literature at the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences in introducing this course, primarily targeted to undergraduate UM students (but open to other constituents) already fluent in a Romance language. This course enables students to become competent, after one year of training, to conduct business in Portuguese.

Steven F. Butterman, Associate Professor of Portuguese and Director of the Portuguese Language Program, Department of Modern Languages and Literature, teaches this course. To date, UM CIBER has supported 7 Portuguese classes with a total of 72 students.

Less-Commonly-Taught Language Tutorials

This program is offered by the Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) at the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami. DILS is a free program open to all undergraduate and graduate students who want to become proficient in a language and culture they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to learn, and that is not offered by the curriculum at UM.

Foreign Culture Experiential Learning Programs

Up to three travel support grants are awarded each year, primarily to advanced graduate students, to support experiential learning programs in regions critical to U.S. business. Top priority is given to cultural immersion and research programs in regions where Arabic, Hindi, Mandarin and Russian languages are spoken.

Environment and Development Program

Undergraduate business students can apply for two travel grants awarded each year to enroll in an intercession program in Peru led by the International Studies department of the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences. The two-week course is part of an ongoing project in Ica, Peru, involving post-earthquake reconstruction and rural development in a very poor community.
