Graduate Admissions Requirements

Admissions into the PhD and MA Programs is conducted every year in the spring for classes to begin in the fall. Admissions for the next class will take place in the spring of 2010 for classes to begin in fall of 2010.

In order to be considered for admission into the graduate programs in Economics, the minimum requirements are: (1) the completion of the baccalaureate degree from a college or university of recognized standing; (2) the equivalent of a "B" cumulative grade point average (GPA); and (3) a combined score of 1100 on the quantitative and verbal sections of the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). In addition, foreign students must score a minimum of 80 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in order to be considered for admission (80 on internet based test, 213 on the computer based test, 550 on the written version).

The average combined verbal and quantitative GRE for the 2008 incoming class is 1347 and the average GPA for the incoming class is 3.34.

Transfer students

Transfer students are accepted into both the MA and PhD programs. The guidelines set forth by the Graduate School are the criteria to follow for transfer of credits from accredited graduate institutions (see the Graduate Bulletin).

The application form may be sent via email or regular mail. Letters of recommendation may sent by regular mail or emailed directly from the reviewer. The code for ETS to directly send GRE and TOEFL scores is 5815.

Official transcripts and GRE and TOEFL test scores are essential in order to be considered for admission. Photocopies of these scores are not accepted. Please keep copies of all material you submit during the application process. The application and all supporting documentation become property of the Department and will not be returned. The admissions committee evaluates an application only after the file is complete with the following:

  • Application form signed by the student
  • A non-refundable fee of $50. A personal check, money order, or cashier's check for the exact amount of the fee, in U.S. dollars or international money order, should be made payable to the University of Miami.
  • An official transcript, diploma and/or certificate is required from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. These documents must be (1) submitted in the original language and (2) submitted by the Registrar's office of the issuing university. Additionally, documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations. Notarized translations alone will not be accepted. Translations supplement, but do not replace, original documents. Please remember to send both. Transcripts should be sent directly from the issuing institution to:

  • Each applicant is required to submit at least two recommendations on the forms provided. International applicants are required to submit three recommendations. Most applicants provide recommendations from a college instructor familiar with the applicant's academic work in areas closely related to the Economics field or other responsible persons well informed about relevant academic or research work the applicant has done. Recommendations should address the student's motivation, ability to conceptualize and deal quantitatively, and research potential.

Information for Admitted International Students
  • A bank verification statement or government sponsorship letter (no more than six months old), addressed to the University of Miami, is required from each international student accepted. This document must confirm that there are sufficient funds in the individual's bank account to cover tuition, books, room and board, medical insurance, and personal expenses for two semesters if assistantship funds are not sufficient. No certificate of Eligibility (I-20) will be issued without a bank verification statement or a certified scholarship statement.
  • Well before departing for the United States, you should present your visa form to the nearest U.S. consul. You should also request an unlimited-entry (not a single-entry) visa. Do not come to the University with a B-2 (tourist) visa.
  • Students admitted to more than one U.S. university must decide prior to obtaining a visa which school they will attend. Upon entry into the United States, the Form I-20 that was shown to the U.S. consul must be presented to immigration authorities. Students will not be permitted to change schools until after the completion of at least one semester in the university or college for which the U.S. consul issued the visa.
