Admission Requirements for all Executive MBA Programs

Candidacy for the University of Miami Executive MBA Program is based on an evaluation of academic and professional preparation and accomplishments. Professionally, the applicant should have demonstrated an aptitude for career advancement and leadership. Whether the applicant is in the early stages of a career or mid-career, career potential is measured by increased workplace responsibility, demonstrated managerial skills, recommendations and assessment of the nomination. Motivation, intellectual curiosity, high ethical standards and perseverance are essential characteristics for success in the Executive MBA Program.

The Admissions Committee considers the "total" person - men and women who show a pattern of achievement and the ability to assume increased responsibility during their careers. The Admissions Index assesses each candidate on the following factors:

  • Years of business-related work experience
  • Years of management experience
  • Level of current position
  • Maturity
  • Undergraduate grade point average
  • GMAT score (if required)
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Undergraduate School
  • Undergraduate Major
  • International experience
  • Intercultural experience

Admission to the Executive MBA Program does not guarantee that a seat is available. A seat is guaranteed upon receipt of the non-refundable $2000 Enrollment Fee required by the Graduate Business Programs Office based on space availability. After a class has been filled, a waiting list of qualified candidates is compiled. Candidates are notified when their status changes.

English Language Proficiency Exams

Demonstrating proficiency in written and oral English is crucial as students must participate in class discussions and presentations, as well as successfully complete written assignments.  Therefore, International applicants whose native language is not English and/or who do not fulfill one of the criteria mentioned below must take an English language proficient exam.  Graduate Business Programs accepts the following exams and respective scores:
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):  The TOEFL should have been taken within 2 years prior to application for admission; a minimum score of 587 (paper-based), 94 (internet-based) or 240 (computer-based) is required.   • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): The IELTS should have been taken within 2 years prior to application for admission; a minimum score of 7.0 on IELTS is required. The above requirement may be waived for non-native English speakers provided the applicant fulfills one of the following criteria:
  • An applicant has earned an undergraduate degree in a country where the official language is English (this does not include degrees from just English-speaking institutions or just a country where English is spoken).  
  • An applicant has studied in the United States at an undergraduate level for at least one year or the equivalent of 30 consecutive credits.   
  • An applicant has lived and worked in an English-speaking country for the past two or more years.

Required Admissions Materials

Application Form

An application form for admission must be completed, signed by the applicant, and submitted to the Graduate Business Programs Office with a $100.00 application fee. Applications will be reviewed by the admissions committee only upon receipt of the application fee and a completed file.


Candidates for admission are required to hold a baccalaureate degree. Official transcripts for all undergraduate coursework as well as any post-graduate coursework from each university attended (including summer school, part-time study, or post-graduate even if only for one course) must be sent directly to the Graduate Business Programs office. An additional final transcript showing degree conferred and date of graduation should be sent after completion of any coursework still in progress at the time of admission. Applicants who received a degree from an international institution must request two official transcripts in sealed envelopes from the university attended. One set must be sent directly to Graduate Business Programs. The second set must be submitted to an official translation service. A certified English translation of both the transcript and the diploma, along with the original transcript and a photocopy of the diploma, must then be submitted to Graduate Business Programs. A detailed current resume listing all work experience is required, including a current business card.

Letter of Recommendation

Each applicant is required to submit one letter of recommendation from a current employer. If the applicant is self-employed a letter from a current client is required.

Admission Interview

Candidates may be asked to interview with an Admissions representative prior to the Admission Committee's final decision. Interviews are by invitation only.


Students are required to attend orientation which is the official beginning of the program.

The Honor Code

By signing the pledge, therefore, each student commits to:

  • Honesty and integrity in the completion of all class and program assignments;
  • Good faith compliance with all class and program requirements;
  • Honest disclosure of personal information required by the admission and career development processes;
  • Support and respect for the norms, values and people that make up our learning community.

All students are required to sign the Honor Code Pledge at the time of orientation.
