Marlins players autographed baseballs, T-shirts, hats, and game programs. Employees displayed their pitching prowess at the dunk tank, and many had their pictures taken with Sebastian the Ibis and Billy the Marlin. Although the Marlins lost to the Padres 7-2, it was a good night for the fans from UM.
“I invited three of my friends and we all had a great time,” said Megan Tice, who works at the School of Business. “The weather was great and it was a perfect night for a ball game.”
During an on-field pregame ceremony, Marlins President David Samson and Florida Marlins Community Foundation Executive Director Nancy Olson presented UM President Donna E. Shalala, Executive Vice President and Provost Thomas J. LeBlanc, and School of Education Associate Dean John Andrew Gillentine with a $7,500 scholarship check. The money will go toward the School of Education’s Sport Administration program on behalf of the Florida Marlins Community Foundation.
Dean Kahn was joined by Shelton “Shelly” Berg, dean of UM’s Frost School of Music, and three UM employees, Lucy Montoya, Crystal Rivera and Miguel McKinney, in throwing out the ceremonial first pitches.
