UM MBAs Win Top Prize in $10,000 ACG Cup Case Competition; School Hosts Contest for First Time in South Florida

The winning team included Graham Tedesco, Ricardo Veneziano and Anuj Malhotra. All are first-year MBA students. The two teams who competed in the ACG Cup earned their place after winning preliminary rounds earlier this month.
Each team took on the role of consultants and tackled issues raised by a potential acquisition. They were given 20 minutes to present advice to the private equity firm purchaser involved in the potential deal, a situation not unlike those faced by professional consultants every day. The competition is designed to give MBA students real world experience and invaluable insights into mergers and acquisitions, investment banking, financial advisory and private equity.
Senior executives from the South Florida business community served as ACG Cup judges. They included: Marc Cabrera, managing director of Morgan Joseph; Emery Sheer, managing partner of Berenfeld, Spritzer, Shechter & Sheer LLP; and Larry Litowitz, partner at Tatum.
“In today’s challenging MBA job market, brought on by the global economic crisis, competitions like this one present an invaluable opportunity for students to differentiate themselves and showcase their skills in front of prospective employers and the ACG membership,” said Alexander Pons, director of the Sanford L. Ziff Graduate Career Services Center at the University of Miami School of Business Administration. “The ACG event provided MBAs with a rare opportunity to meet and network with these potential employers who represent the region’s leading financial firms.”
The ACG is a global association for professionals involved in corporate growth, corporate development, and mergers and acquisitions. It has more than 12,000 members from corporations, private equity, finance, and professional service firms representing Fortune 1000, FTSE 100, and mid-market companies in 53 chapters in North America and Europe.
