Business Law Professor Wins Excellence in Research Award

The Academy of Legal Studies in Business has awarded Patricia Sanchez Abril, associate professor of business law, the 2016 Hoeber Memorial Award for Excellence in Research.

The award recognizes the best article of the year published in the American Business Law Journal, as selected by the journal’s peer editors.

The article recognized is “Digital-Self Ownership: A Publicity-Rights Framework for Determining Employee Social Media,” tackles the issue of whether social media audiences - friends and followers of an individual - belong to the employee or the employer after a separation from employment.

Abril and her co-author proposed a framework for determining whether social media rights should stay with either one.

Abril also received the Hoeber Memorial Award in 2011 and 2012, for the predecessor to this research, which was one of the first law review articles on employee rights in social media.
