Artie Pearsall of Glen Cove, New York, knows a good idea when he sees it. And for Artie, a really good idea was becoming a course assistant in UM's signature First Step (MGT 100) class during his senior year. In addition to helping the instructor with the course logistics for the required freshman class, he mentored students through assignments and helped them with their individual projects.

“When I was in high school, I was looking to study abroad and go to a new place where I could find diversity and also learn something about a new culture. It turned out Miami and the University of Miami was the place to be.”

Brad Cohn, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, believes in paying it forward. "I had a great peer counselor during my freshman year, and her advice really made an impact on me. I still talk to her now, five years later." His peer counselor's influence inspired Brad to become a peer counselor himself.

Shayla Waldon, of West Palm Beach, Florida, is a future attorney who already knows how to think like one. How did you get smart? For one thing, this goal- oriented legal studies major worked on cases and depositions over the summer at the Palm Beach County, Florida School District Office of Chief Council.

She's an honors student majoring  in marketing and finance and minoring in psychology, so it's hard to believe that Sarah Wright, from Silver Spring, Maryland, has time for many extracurricular activities. But Sarah - who maintains a 3.9 GPA - chairs of SBA Council, is a tour guide, serves as a teaching assistant for the FIRST Step program, participates in women's Ultimate Frisbee, and serves as a peer counselor for freshmen.
