2011 Research, Innovation and Creativity Forum
School of Business Winners and Participants
Undergraduate Research Recognition
The School of Business undergraduate’s activity participated in this year Annual Citizens Board 2011 Research, Creativity and Innovation Forum. The senior class winners were named after the university-wide competition on March 29, 2011. Sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Community Outreach and The Graduate School, the Forum is designed to motivate students to engage in peer reviewed research. The School of Business Research Recognition Luncheon was held on April 15, 2011. Top winners were awarded plaques and all participants received certificates of participation. The research posters were on display for all students to admire.
The competition is open to University of Miami students from all disciplines and school years who have completed or are currently exploring topics of interest. Students are required to create an abstract and a presentation poster detailing their studies. Forty nine School of Business students participated individually or with a group. Students were required to give a 10-minute presentation to a group of judges and answer questions about their research. Students were evaluated based on presentation style, significance, originality, methodology, and presentation quality. The School of Business students were judged by Linda Neider, vice dean for Undergraduate Business Programs, Patricia Abril, assistant professor of business law, Sheryl Alonso, lecturer in Management, Vaidy Jayaraman, professor of management, Trae Williamson, lecturer in Management and Mary Young, director of the Ziff Center. Critiques from the judges offered students both insight on how to improve and inspiration to continue conducting research.
Elisah Lewis, director of research and student support services who organized the program said “this was an extremely worthwhile program in that students not only learned how to present a research study to their peers and faculty judges but also learned from seeing the posters of their fellow students. Seniors through freshmen interacted and were proud to share information about their posters. The upper-class students were a wonderful inspiration to the freshman and encouraged them to be excited about conducting research in the future.”
