Admission to the PhD Program is open in the spring for classes to begin in the fall. Admissions for the next class will take place in the Spring 2022 semester for classes to begin in the Fall 2022 semester. We are not taking applications for Fall 2021.
Applicants for admission to graduate study in Economics should have an extensive background in Economic Theory and Quantitative methods.
Please read the instructions carefully before filling out the forms and should keep copies of all materials submitted during the application process. By submitting the online application, the applicant certifies the information provided in the application is complete and accurate. The application form, statement of purpose and letters of recommendation/forms should be submitted online. We will not process your application until it is complete.

A non-refundable application fee of $85 is required. The application fee cannot be waived.
Candidates for admission are required to hold a baccalaureate degree. Official transcripts for all undergraduate coursework and any post-graduate coursework from each university attended (including summer school, part-time study, or post-graduate, even if only for one course) must be sent directly to the Graduate Business Programs office. An additional final transcript showing the degree conferred and date of graduation should be sent after completion of any coursework still in progress at the time of admission.
Applicants who received a degree from an international institution must request two official transcripts in sealed envelopes from the university attended. One set must be sent directly to Graduate Business Programs. The second set must be submitted to an official translation service. A certified English translation of both the transcript and the diploma, along with the original transcript and a photocopy of the diploma, must then be submitted to Graduate Business Programs. Starting Spring 2020, the Office of Graduate Business Programs will no longer receive transcripts, diplomas or evaluations. Please send official transcripts and related documents to World Education Service for a course-by-course WES ICAP evaluation and request the report to be sent to the Miami Herbert Business School. Make sure to include the name of the program to which you are applying to.
Applicants are responsible for the evaluation fee.
Official GRE scores (less than 5 years old) are required for the PhD in Economics program. The minimum required GRE score is 1250. To report GRE scores, use institution code R5815.

International applicants must submit official TOEFL scores (less than 2 years old) as part of their application. You may be exempt from this application requirement if you completed a bachelor’s or a master’s degree at a recognized institution at which English was the native language of instruction. A minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 94 (internet-based) or 240 (computer-based) is required. To report TOEFL scores, use institution code 5815.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): The IELTS should have been taken within 2 years prior to application for admission; a minimum score of 7.0 on IELTS is required. The IELTS Code for the University of Miami is 5815.
To ensure full consideration for the next cycle of admission to the PhD program, all application materials for the Fall 2022 must be received by January 10, 2022. Decisions on admission and support will be announced before April 15, 2022.
Official transcripts and GRE and TOEFL test scores are essential in order to be considered for admission. Photocopies of these scores are not accepted. Please keep copies of all material you submit during the application process. The application and all supporting documentation become property of the Department and will not be returned. The admissions committee evaluates an application only after the file is complete with the following:
Transfer students are accepted into the PhD program. The guidelines set forth by the Graduate School are the criteria to follow for transfer of credits from accredited graduate institutions (see the Graduate Bulletin).
