Overview
So, you’ve become a new supervisor or manager and are wondering, “What do I need to do to be an outstanding leader?” This module will prepare you for the transition from high performing employee to first-time manager by exposing you to key leadership principles; giving you the opportunity to assess your natural leadership inclinations; and using role plays and cases, help you learn to be the type of leader who builds employee engagement to achieve high-performing results.
Specifically, you will:
- learn the body language and cues that characterize top leaders;
- learn leadership communication basics to build trust and rapport with your subordinates;
- learn how to work with different types of constituents and the appropriate styles of influence to use with each;
- learn how to unite employees behind a common vision while illustrating to each how they uniquely contribute;
- learn how to apply the techniques learned to your specific leadership context.
Faculty

Professor Chet Schriesheim is a Distinguished Professor of Management in the Miami Herbert Business School, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He has published over a hundred articles in the area of Leadership and recently received the Distinguished Career Award from the Academy of Management. He has consulting with organizations throughout the United States in areas such as leadership development and survey development.
Linda Neider is Professor and chair on the Management Department at Miami Herbert Business School, University of Miami. Her interests are in leadership and organizational effectiveness; transforming organizational cultures; human resource systems, health care management, training and development needs assessment; and survey design, development and analysis.
Terri A. Scandura is currently a Professor of Management in the Miami Herbert Business School at the University of Miami. Her fields of interest include leadership, mentorship, and applied research methods. She has been a visiting scholar in Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, China and the United Arab Emirates. Dr. Scandura has authored or co-authored over two hundred presentations, articles and book chapters.
