Welcome New Freshmen!

Welcome and congratulations on your admission to Miami Business School. We are so glad that you decided to join the ’Cane family!

Part of your transition to college includes enrolling for courses for your first semester.  At MBS, registration for the first semester’s courses is simple because a member of our registration advising team will enroll you in 4 of the 5 courses you will take.  The courses in your schedule are required for all business students.  A typical first-semester schedule at MBS looks like this:

  1. ENG 105 English Composition 1
  2. MAS 110 Quantitative Applications in Business
  3. BUS 101 First Step
  4. One of the following:
    1. ECO 211 Microeconomic Theory
    2. BSL 212 Business Law
    3. MKT 201 Foundations of Marketing
  5. One elective or Arts & Humanities cognate course

Step #1:  (Applies only to students who are enrolled in coursework at another institution for the FALL 2018 semester.)  EMAIL THE REGISTRATION ADVISING TEAM at newfreshman@mbs.miami.edu with a list of coursework you are completing at another institution during the FALL 2018 semester.  Be sure to write from an email address that corresponds to an account you check regularly, and include your name and ID # in the subject line of the message.

Step #2:  CHOOSE AN ELECTIVE AND PUT IT IN YOUR SHOPPING CART IN CANELINK BEFORE NOVEMBER 15.  Shopping carts will be open beginning on November 12. You may wish to use the Cognate Search Engine to select an elective that will count toward the Cognates Program of General Education, but that is not required.  You are permitted to select any elective that interests you and for which you have completed the prerequisite coursework.

Step #3:  YOU WILL BE REGISTERED by a member of the MBS registration advising team. Your Math* and English Composition course registrations will be based on your SAT/ACT Scores and/or any coursework in which you are currently enrolled at another institution.

Step #4: PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL REGULARLY!  The registration advising team may need to communicate with you regarding your unique registration.  Your permanent Academic Advisor will be assigned to you at Spring Orientation.

Step #5:  SEND FINAL TRANSCRIPTS to the Transcript Evaluation unit, or in hard copy to:
                                                University of Miami
                                                Admission – Transcripts
                                                P.O. Box 249117
                                                Coral Gables, FL 33124-5229

* If you wish to change your math placement, you must sign up for the ALEKS MATH PLACEMENT exam, which is offered on campus during Spring Orientation. Depending on your performance on that exam, if necessary your advisor can help you change your math course registration.
