Anuj Mehrotra

Anuj Mehrotra became interim dean of the University of Miami Business School on July 1, 2016. He is also the Leslie O. Barnes Scholar and a professor of management science. Most recently, he served as the vice dean of graduate business programs and executive education. He previously served as vice dean for faculty affairs and as chairman of the Department of Management Science.

Under Mehrotra’s leadership as vice dean, the School diversified its portfolio of graduate business programs. He led the launch of online and hybrid degree programs, a suite of specialized master’s degree programs, the innovative Miami Executive MBA for the Americas program, the Miami Executive MBA for Artists and Athletes program and the Global Executive MBA program, which is taught entirely in Spanish. The School also established new and innovative experiential learning courses, which include international immersion and consulting experiences. These programs address the evolving market needs and have helped grow the graduate student enrollment by 70 percent in the last five years. Concurrently, the School’s degree and non-degree programs have been recognized among the best in various rankings.

Mehrotra’s research interests are in large scale optimization and interdisciplinary applications. His research has been published in the top-tier academic journals including Management Science, Mathematical Programming, Naval Research Logistics, and the Informs Journal on Computing. He has been invited to present his research at national and international meetings and has co-edited a book, Extending the Horizons: Advances in Computing, Optimization, and Decision Technologies, and a special issue of Discrete Applied Mathematics on computational methods for graph coloring and its generalizations. He has also co-chaired several conferences in optimization and related application areas.
Mehrotra’s research projects include his work with the U.S. Coast Guard to optimally locate air stations to respond to distress calls and his work on determining routing and staffing decisions for distributed call centers. He has also developed models for making an optimal choice from a mix of channels for sales and marketing. His research has included developing specialized methods for congressional districting, for forming marine reserves for fishery management, and for forming optimal newspaper delivery zones. This type of research is designed to achieve maximum possible benefit from limited resources.

Mehrotra has taught extensively in the MBA and executive MBA programs. His research and teaching have been recognized through multiple awards from the School of Business and the University of Miami. Mehrotra has served as a consultant to several corporations, including American Airlines, A.T. Kearney, Goodyear, Exxon, Capital One, US West, and EDS. His previous experience includes visiting positions at the (now) Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University and at the T. J. Watson Research Center. He received his PhD in operations research from Georgia Institute of Technology, his MS from Virginia Tech, and his BS in mechanical engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India.
