Student Managed Investment Fund

The Category 5 Student Managed Investment Fund (Cat 5 SMIF) is both an investment portfolio and a sequence of classes at the University of Miami. With more than $1,000,000 in assets under management, the Fund provides students with real-world investment management and decision making experience in both asset allocation and security selection as Analysts and Portfolio Managers.

How to Participate

The Fund is open to exceptionally-strong full-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at Miami Herbert Business School who are interested in learning about the investment management industry. More information on Fund courses and application requirements can be found here.

Once selected to join the Fund, students will be placed into one of two roles:

Training sessions will be held in investment analysis and financial modeling for the Analysts, and portfolio optimization, performance attribution, and risk analysis for Portfolio Managers. Industry specific training will continue throughout the semester.

Students are expected to be involved in industry research and investment proposals on an ongoing basis.

Student Perspective

"One of my Best Experiences"

"The Cat 5 SMIF class has been one of my best UM experiences as a student. This course allows undergraduate students to apply what they learn and to make investment decisions. I gained experience managing a portfolio, pitching stocks, and stock selection. And I was able to access mentoring from professionals working in positions to which I aspire. As a result, I was able to focus on the segments of financial industry where I wanted to work and I secured a full-time job at an investment firm upon graduation,” says senior Alexa Coyle (pictured right).
